We were on the bombing run attacking Duisberg and we were fired on by a Halifax crew. There was considerable damage to the port side and our a/c lost it's hydraulic fluid. When the Halifax crew returned from their trip, they claimed they had shot down an unidentified 'German night fighter'. He completed nineteen operations before he was screened, as his Wing Commander felt that he had been lucky too many times and might not be so lucky the next time. Reg has always been mindful of the loss rate in Bomber Command. He has a photograph taken a day after he got his wings.
