97 (Straits Settlements) Squadron

From September 1939 to April 1940, 97 Squadron was a training squadron equipped with Whitleys based at RAF Abingdon where it became 10 Operational Training Unit. The squadron reformed in March 1941 in 5 Group at RAF Waddington but moved immediately to RAF Coningsby. It flew Manchesters until January 1942 when it began to convert to Lancasters. From March 1942 to April 1943 it operated from RAF Woodhall Spa. In April 1943 it moved to RAF Bourn and became a Pathfinder squadron as part of 8 Group. During August-September 1943 the three flights from the squadron were based separately at RAF Gransden Lodge, RAF Graveley and RAF Oakington. In April 1944 the squadron transferred back to RAF Coningsby to act as a marker squadron for 5 Group.Refinements:
