At the start of the war 98 Squadron was at RAF Hucknall equipped with Battles. It had short spells at RAF Scampton and RAF Finningley and was originally a non-operational training squadron despite being sent to France from April to June 1940. The squadron returned to Britain at RAF Gatwick before transferring to Coastal Command and being posted to Iceland in July 1940, where it was disbanded in 1941. It reformed in September 1942 at RAF West Raynham in 2 Group but now flying B-25s which it operated until the end of the war. It moved to RAF Foulsham in October 1942 where it was based when it and 2 Group transferred to the Second Tactical Air Force in June 1943. From October 1944 the squadron was located on the continent, first in Belgium and then in Germany.
