William Martin’s Flying Log Book as Air Navigator from 27th November 1942 until 27th June 1946. Trained as a navigator at No. 1 CNS Rivers, Canada,. Posted to Scotland to 4 AFU in 1943. Further training in 1660 and 1654 CUs. Posted for operations to 50 Squadron. Crew was broken up after one operation and posted to 5 LFS. Further posting to 57 Squadron. Final operational posting to 617 Squadron. Post war posted to Digri, India with 617 Squadron until return to England in 1946.
Served at RAF West Freugh, RAF Swinderby, RAF Wigsley, RAF Skellingthorpe, RAF Syerston, RAF East Kirkby, RAF Woodhall Spa, RAF Waddington, RAF Binbrook.
Aircraft flown were Anson, Halifax, Lancaster.
1 night operation with 50 Squadron, 9 day and 23 night operations with 617 Squadron to Berlin, Tours, Aachen, Paris, Brunswick, Munich, Schweinfurt, Clermont Ferrand, Amiens, Kiel Bay, Antwerp, St Valery, Kattegat, Maisy, La Penelle, Foret de Cerisy, Etampes, Caen, Aunay, Beauvoir, Wesseling, Stuttgart, Givors-Lyons, Caumont, Joigny, Rouen, Trossy St Maximin, Saint-Leu-d'Esserent, Foret de Lisle Adam, La Pallice area. Flew 2 Op Exodus, 4 Op Dodge and 5 Cook’s Tours with 617 Squadron.
Ditched in North Sea (21 June 1944) between the Norfolk and Netherlands coasts successfully rescued after spending 15 hours afloat.
