At the start of the war 90 Squadron was equipped with Blenheims and used as a training squadron for Bomber Command. Initially based at RAF West Raynham and then RAF Upwood it merged with 35 Squadron to become 17 Operational Training Unit in April 1940. The squadron reformed in May 1941 at RAF Watton in 2 Group as the first RAF squadron equipped with B-17s which it used in high level daylight bombing trials until these were discontinued in September 1941. Whilst operating B-17s the squadron was based at RAF West Raynham and RAF Polebrook. The squadron re-equipped with Blenheims again until disbanding in February 1942. The squadron was reformed in November 1942 at RAF Bottesford as part of 3 Group equipped with Stirlings. From December 1942 to May 1943 it was based at RAF Ridgewell moving then to RAF Wratting Common until October 1943. Its final move was to RAF Tuddenham in October 1943 from where it converted to Lancasters in May 1944 which it operated until the end of the war.Refinements:
