In September 1939 the Battles of 88 Squadron were sent to France as part of the Advanced Air Striking Force. In June 1940 the squadron moved to Northern Ireland, operating Battles and Blenheims. The squadron transferred to 2 Group Bomber Command in July 1941 at RAF Swanton Morley but in August 1941 moved to RAF Attlebridge and converted to Bostons, the first squadron to do so. The squadron moved to RAF Oulton in September 1942 and back to RAF Swanton Morley in March 1943. In September 1943 the squadron transferred to the Second Tactical Air Force until disbanding in April 1945.
