In 1939, 51 Squadron was first at RAF Linton on Ouse and then RAF Dishforth in 4 Group flying Whitleys. Between May and October 1942 the squadron was loaned to Coastal Command. It returned to Bomber Command at RAF Snaith flying Halifaxes and transferred to Transport Command in May 1945.
