During the first months of World War Two 52 Squadron was based at RAF Benson with Battles and Ansons in an instructional capacity, training pilots for the Advanced Air Striking Force. In April 1940 the squadron was absorbed into 12 Operational Training Unit. No operations were flown while the squadron was in Bomber Command. Later the squadron was reformed in Iraq and became part of the Middle East Air Force and flew Blenheims, Baltimores and C-47s.
