Description
Side by side reconnaissance photographs showing an industrial area with buildings, roads and towards the right, some railway sidings. This industrial area is orientated from lower left to top right. Chimney smoke is seen on the left hand photograph. The right hand photograph, of the same location, shows most areas damaged or destroyed, with many of the buildings without roofs. Two oil tanks centre bottom are damaged and the railway sidings are covered in bomb craters. Explanatory text below 'LEUNA (Merseburg) has been attacked several times but was in partial operation at the date of the B.C attack on the night 14/15 January 1945, On the right is the photograph taken on the 14th February showing the tremendous damage done (compare with the same area before the attack on the plant started). The plant is totally inactive and likely to remain so for a considerable period. H.Q.B.C Air Staff int P.T. 438-9'. Submitted with description 'Before and after" reconnaissance photographs of Leuna synthetic oil plant, Merseburg. The image on the right, taken on 14/2/1945, shows the damage caused by the RAF Bomber Command operation of 14-15/01/1945. The printed caption includes "H.Q.B.C. Air Staff ...Ent P.I. 438-9'.
