Tuesday. Dec. 30th. 1941.
My dear Douglas.
I have just been reading one of the 6 letters which arrived together on Dec. 15th. This one is dated August 24th. There are not many questions to answer but you mention Dad’s pipe. Yes he still smokes a pipe & smokes what tobacco he can get, Four Square, Rubicon, Legation, seem to be the usual blends. You know there has been a very acute shortage of cigarettes & tobacco, during the summer months especially. Things seem to be just a little easier in that respect just now. Dad’s cigarettes seem to be Capstan usually & he has been very fortunate in having a regular supply each week. No he didn’t buy new pipes. He’s using those in the rack. Were they yours? I seem to remember you trying to smoke “Bruno”. Farl is a Scottish word of 4 letters. I think it really represents a kind of meal. My baker sometimes stocks Farl biscuits. Grapes here are absolute luxury at 15/- (fifteen shillings a pound.) Tomatoes are now very scarce & are controlled at 2/- (two shillings) a pound. You mention roast beef & mutton but you would scarcely recognise them in war time guise. Our bit this

[inserted] week [/inserted] has borne a very striking resemblance to tallow candles. I have a notion that in its lifetime it trotted a lot of miles around the Australian bush or some such place. But we don’t grumble, we have a very great deal to be thankful for. This morning I had a letter from Mrs Hole, who seems very sad. Ted went abroad on Oct. 27th & they are very anxiously awaiting news from him. She tells that Harold was married at Skipton Parish Church on Dec. 24th. She has sent cake & a card with a request that I send the card on to you but as you know, that would not be allowed. I wonder if you received my letter telling that Don Chadwick was married in September. Joan Lander was married on July 5th. Dorothy Pell on August 12th. Geoffrey Holmes married Oct 29th. (Mrs Holmes’s Christmas letter brought that news, with a very nice photograph) This morning’s mail also included a New Year’s greeting from Mr & Mrs Green at Old Colwyn & such a nice letter from little Miss Smithies at Crumpsall. I have not heard [deleted] of [/deleted] [inserted] a [/inserted] word of, or from, Mrs Clayton since I went to see her on Dec. 18th. I wrote to her for Xmas at her brother’s house at Huddersfield, so far no response. Tomorrow a.m. I shall send a cable to you, in the hope you may receive it on New Year’s Day. This day we have the first real fog of winter with thick white frost. Seasonal, but not very comfortable. Now love Goodbye once again with all our love & thoughts & prayers. from Mother & Dad
