NUMBER 44
Kriegsgefangenenlager
Datum: 20-1-43
Nothing fresh to report from here of course no mail has arrived from you & I am terribly hungry for news of wife & child. Had Frances been here recently she would have had some singing practice on two occasions but I gather that she had some anyway & hope that there were no untoward incidents. I wish you were not in the metropolis. A few of us have been trying to construct an ice rink for our own barrack & as all water has to be carried by hand, we’ve undertaken a tough job. To crown it all, it thawed today & several days labour disappeared in little streams of water going in every direction away from the rink. We have made a communal ice hockey rink here (of sorts) but it seems to be monopolised by Canadians & Poles. all my love darling, keep well John.
