Mittelland Canal near Kloster Gravenhorst and aircrew

Top - a reconnaissance photograph of results of a bombing attack. From a newspaper article. The photograph shows the Mittelland canal running bottom left to top right and very many bomb craters concentrated in middle with canal edges and embankment totally obliterated and craters extending over into farmland. Canal drained throughout this section. Roads running near to canal are also ill-defined through craters. Railway in lower right quadrant. “U” shaped building just visible in top left is Kloster Gravenhorst. The printed caption reads: "Super Shooting: The incredible results of a night attack by R.A.F. Bomber Command on the Mitelland [sic] Canal, near Gravenhorst. It is amazing that such concentration and accuracy can be achieved on so slender a target at night'.
Bottom - two aircrew, the one on the left wearing battledress with Air Gunner half brevet and the one on the right a tunic with pilot's brevet, flight sergeant rank and side cap. Submitted with description 'Photo of two unidentified RAF aircrew in battledress, both holders of the Distinguished Flying Medal. On the left of the photo is a sergeant air gunner in battledress; on the right is a flight sergeant pilot in service dress'.
