Saturday Dec. 6th/41
My dear Douglas.
I have just said “Goodnight” to Dad who has gone on night duty again. We don’t like Saturday night duty as it means a long walk home on Sunday morning – no buses at such an early hour. Dad goes off just quietly cheerful. He really is remarkable in his placidity. Not up & down, all over the place, like the little old lady who gets very excited over the smallest trifle but there we are!! Well love I’ve mentioned in two previous letters how deeply touched we were by your kind message cabled last Saturday. Thank you again so very much, but we’ll wait until that great day for which we live – our joyous reunion - & then we will indulge in many treasures again. I was very delighted to receive a letter from Auntie Una this morning inviting us to go spend Christmas with them at Horsforth. She says “I’m afraid it will not be a very festive season, we have all too much on our minds at present, be [sic] we can certainly make the best of things & help each other along during these difficult times & to look forward to the better times that are surely ahead.
I do hope you get Good news of Douglas. We many times think & talk about him. Let me have his

latest address, I want to send him a Christmas greetings cable. Walter has not been well again (his old trouble) & has had to have a few days in bed, & has to go very carefully. We hear fairly regularly from Joe.” and there my quotation must end. Dad is not sure about getting away on Christmas Eve & travelling is very difficult but we do hope we can go. We’ll let you know by cable as usual. I do wish I could get some letters from you. It is eleven weeks today since we got the last one & have remarked many times what a blessing we did get the letter with the photos dated August 8th. Just one after that dated August 28th. I wonder if you’ve still got your little dog & baby jackal & always I am wondering if you have enough food & clothing to keep you warm. Now love I will say Goodnight & finish my letter in the morning. The apple tree is still standing upright in spite of rather high winds which have the merit of removing & preventing fog. Sunday morning 8-10 & we’ve just finished breakfast. Dad had a good walk home in moonlight. As we cannot draw the curtains until 8-45 I thought I could finish my letter to you, then it will get to the post in good time but the post is any old how at the moment. No doubt when you receive this letter Christmas will be over so I will just say the season’s greetings for the New Year, all happiness possible under present conditions. All our love & thoughts & prayers from Mother & Dad.
