Your letter 51 came today. I fully realise all your difficulties & frankly do not expect you to be able to secure[?] a house or land but I would strongly urge you not to buy anything on account of our very limited capital. I have recently read a lot about the disaster that came to those who invested their all in farms from 1917 onwards. Having bought at high prices which were still rising they suffered tragically when the slump came. If you can’t rent anything suitable under £100, wait till I come home. I too have little hope that we shall ever farm but fear that we should also suffer financial stringency if I turned to farm accountancy. The most I hope for is a good job in London & a home with a little land (with hired labour) in the country. Thanks for birthday wishes. John.
