424 Squadron was a Canadian squadron formed in October 1942 with Wellingtons at RAF Topcliffe as part of 4 Group, transferring to the Canadian 6 Group the following January. In April 1943 the squadron moved to RAF Leeming for two weeks before moving to RAF Dalton for two weeks. From May to September 1943 the squadron was based in North Africa as part of 205 Group before re-joining Bomber Command in 6 Group but now at RAF Skipton on Swale converting to Halifaxes. In January 1945 the squadron converted to Lancasters for the final months of the war.
