In September 1939, 21 Squadron was in 2 Group based at RAF Watton with Blenheims. From June to October 1940 the squadron operated out of RAF Lossiemouth following which it returned to RAF Watton to carry out anti-shipping strikes. In December 1941 the squadron was moved to Malta where it was disbanded in April 1942. The squadron reformed on the same day in Britain at RAF Bodney back in 2 Group still with Blenheims but in May converted to Venturas. From November 1942 to April 1943 the squadron was at RAF Methwold and then based at RAF Oulton where the squadron transferred, along with 2 Group, to the Second Tactical Air Force in June 1943. In October 1943 the Venturas were replaced by Mosquitos, which were used for the rest of the war.Refinements:
