Title

Partial letter from unknown author to Winnie

Description

General philosophising about men and women. Continues with gossip about boy and girl friends. Hopes they are safe from air raids. Says there was nothing to worry about at his end of the globe. The boys out there were quite confident that they defeat the Italians especially with the encouragement of ships like HMAS Sydney and HMNZS Achilles.

without spirit, for I cannot be denied that mans greatest inspiration is woman. If therefore one takes away the courage of the woman, man is tempted to do anything rather than see her subjected to a terror which she cannot withstand, thus the [deleted] tradgery [sic] [/deleted] [inserted] traygdy [sic] [/inserted] of France. I am of course using the term ‘man’ and ‘woman’ as signifieing [sic] the mass in that even the man who may not have any direct conection [sic] with a girl, or mother, or sister, still feels that he is fighting for the women of his country.

That I think concludes this weeks ‘sermon’ which though shockingly put, will at least be of some little help to you if and when you get an attack of the blues.

I have not been down to Cairo for some time so there isn’t anything much of interest to report from that direction. By the way Winnie I was surprised that there was no mention of the boyfriend in your letter I was somewhat interested in the outcome of the affair.

Regarding myself I have almost forgotten what the company of a decent girl is like, I have only been out [inserted] once [/inserted] with a girl once since we have been in Egypt (a Manchester girl) we [inserted] (the regiment) [/inserted] went out into the desert for a time just after I had met her, consequently I lost contact.

The English girls here are either too suspicious of

uniforms or are contacted by officers. Perhaps it is as well that we have far greater things to [deleted] at [/deleted] occupye [sic] our minds with at present, otherwise a few of us may have become ‘bad boys’ with the inviting Egyptian ‘glamour’ girls!.

I do hope and pray that you are all safe and undismayed in the face of the mass air-raids. [deleted] I [/deleted] – time and time again I have wished that I had never left England. I was cruelly disappointed that I had a not waited a few weeks [deleted] and [/deleted] before I enlisted, I would then have been in the crowd that is now at Home.

However we cannot pick and chose [sic] at a time like this but must be content to do our bit when and where we may be put.

There is nothing to worry about at this end of the globe we are comparativly [sic] safe and the boys out here are quite confident that we can take care of the ‘Ities’ when the time comes especially with the encouragement given to us by ships like H.M.A.S. Sydney and H.M.N.Z.S. Achilles. to show us [deleted] th [/deleted] what the boys down under really can do. By the time you are reading this August will almost out – without the usual Bank Holiday which illustrates the hugh [sic] sacrifices you people at home are putting forward in the Empire cause. Perhaps the day is not far distant when we shall once again live in peace, who knows?
