Description

I J Howell’s wireless operator/ air gunner’s flying log book covering the period from 6 September 1939 to 10 April 1941. Detailing his operations flown as wireless operator/air gunner. He was stationed at RAF Finningley (76 Squadron and 7 BATFlt), RAF Upper Heyford (76 Squadron), RAF Hemswell (144 Squadron) and RAF Cottesmore (14 OTU). Aircraft flown in were Valentia, Anson and Hampden. He flew a total of one daylight and 41 night-time operations with 144 Squadron including one early return and one recall totalling 42. Targets were Hamburg, Oslo, North Sea sweep, Cologne, Bordeaux, Gelsenkirchen, France and Kiel plus many unspecified. His log book is stamped ‘Death presumed 10 April 1941’ but no operation is recorded on that date.
