BENNERLEY BOY AWARDED THE D.F.C.
PILOT-OFFICER HAROLD WAKEFIELD.
An Ilkeston boy has been awarded the D.F.C. in recognition of numerous operations against the enemy in which he has invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty. He is Pilot-Officer Harold Ernest Wakefield, R.A.F. V.R., No. 51 Squadron.
Pilot-Officer Wakefield is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Wakefield, formerly of Ilkeston, but now residing at Leicester. He was born in 1923 at Bennerley Avenue as was his mother, and he attended Bennerley School up to the time he went to Wyggeston Grammar School. He enlisted as an engineer in the R.A.F. in 1942 and received his commission in 1944 just previous to gaining the D.F.C.
He is a nephew of Mr. Arthur Shooter, Depedale, Derby Road, Ilkeston, and of the late Lieut. Harold Shooter, brother of Mr. Arthur Shooter, who served in the last war and was awarded the M.C.
