Dear Sir,
Amongst the personal effects of your son, an envelope addressed to you was found.
In accordance with regulations, this was retained in safe custody pending a definite classification of the casualty. As, unhappily, Sgt. Dennis has now been presumed dead, the envelope has – again in accordance with regulations – been opened by an Officer at this unit, in case it should contain some testamentary document, but was found to contain a letter, which I enclose.
I trust that you will realize that the delay in sending it, and the fact that the envelope has been opened are due to the regulations referred to above.
