Dear Daphne,
It seems a long while since the last letter I wrote to you, & I am afraid there is not much to tell this time.
First of all lets get down to the real reason for the letter, that is to wish you ‘Many happy returns’ for the 16th. I had hopped [sic] to be home to celebrate the occasion with you, but still there it is, we cant
[page break]
have it all ways, & I should be seeing you again pretty soon afterwards.
I hope that you don’t think that I have forgotten that £1 that I borrowed off you last leave, nor for that matter have I forgotten the one that I borrowed off Mother at the same [inserted] time [/inserted] I am sorry that I couldn’t see my way clear for paying them back before I came into Hospital, but I shall bring them with me when I get on leave.
[page break]
Since my last letter home my troubles have started to go away again. I hope that they stay away this time, & let me get on leave as I am very tired of lying in this confounded bed. By the way you’ll be interested to know that I hate Chicken in any form from now onwards, as they have done nothing except dish it up to me nearly every meal.
There isn’t much else except to repeat again that I hope you spend an enjoyable birthday, also give my
[page break]
best wishes to Kip.
Affectionately,
Hugh
