My Dearest Mother,
Just a few lines to let you know that I am keeping well and happy. Am now on an Operational Squadron and have been here for over a week. As we only had a couple of days leave after finishing O.T.U I could not see any of the relatives so spent the time in London with a few of the other Rhodesian fellows.
Unfortunately have not been posted to a Rhodesian Squadron but have asked to

be transferred so that may come off fairly soon.
Have only done one bombing trip so far as we have been held up by weather. It gave me great pleasure to be where the bombs come from and not where they end up.
This place is pretty far from any town of decent size but have been to Oakham a couple of times. As you will judge am pretty well in the middle of Rutland.
I collected a letter from you at Rhodesia house when in London also the one from Harry which you enclosed. Am glad to hear that you are all well and

hope you will still be that way when you receive this.
The sun is actually shining outside for a change today and the country still looks fairly pretty but the scenery here is not at all impressive as it consists of very gently undulating fields with the occasional old fashioned village. Have been here for what seems such a long time that all the newness has completely worn off.
Should be doing something in the way of flying tonight. Have been standing by for the

last 5 nights and flying has been scrubbed owing to weather [deleted] and then [/deleted] so hope it’s clear tonight and then we have a couple of nights free.
Well dear Mother must close now with much love to you all from
your loving son
Donald.
