Datum: 5th MARCH 1944.
No mail so far this month but some tobacco from the faithful Miss Hoare. I’m greatly struck by the kindness of so many total strangers. Wish I could get a parcel (clothes etc) from you. Haven’t had one for 9 months now & supplies of socks & boot polish running low. No toothpaste at all. Can’t say I’m overjoyed at my promotion – anything that comes merely through passage to time isn’t worth having. Any chance of photos of you, Frances or home? I think of you constantly & try to imagine your activities. Frank P still not heard from wife. Am still slaving away at fiddle such drudgery & such miserable conditions for practice & NO progress! Hope you & daughter thrive
