My dear Amy & Bob,
We were all very sorry indeed to hear that Hedley is missing and although I was speaking on the phone my mind was all in a whirl and could not say all that I would have liked.
In writing, I only wish to say that we quite realise your feelings and only hope and trust that the worst of your fears may be unfounded.
It is hard I know to be brave under such a cloud, but as quite a number of our boys have turned up after being reported missing, there is still a shred of hope that Hedley has landed somewhere.
Bear up bravely. There may be a silver lining to the dark cloud which overshadows you.
Again I say we are truly sorry and pray
[page break]
that you you will be given sufficient strength to carry you through.
Your loving brother,
[underlined] Jim [/underlined]
