Title
Luftpost Ausgabe Süd, Nummer 40
Description
Allied advances in Holland and France are discussed, including breaches of the Siegfried Line, involving allied armies and paratroopers. The German border has been crossed in four places. Germany still holds the channel ports and those in Brittany. In central France, 20,000 German troops have surrendered with their commander, Major General Elsted, and 21 German generals in France.
General Eisenhower gave a radio broadcast on 18th September 2024 to the people of west and south-west Germany, providing details of the allied military administration which has been established in the occupied German area for the duration of the military operations.
Russia is reported to be preparing an offensive near Warsaw with over a million newly trained soldiers on standby. Their army reports are focused on the Balkans: the Ukrainian and Yugoslavian armies advancing through North Transylvania. The OKW reports on a major offensive in Latvia and a continuation of the offensive in South Poland.
The impact of the change to the western front is that the allies can now fly to Germany from bases in France. They are not exposed to flak over the border and the air warning system is significantly reduced. Over 40,000 tons of bombs have been dropped between 10th and 14th September.
Göring had promised in 1942 that Germany would not go hungry; it benefited from food supplies in Europe. Despite a decent harvest, it claims there is insufficient food to feed the German population and foreign workers. The United Nations us working on a plan to help the German people after the war, however there are no guarantees the food will go first to Germany.
There is a detailed description of activity along the southern front in Italy.
Germany has not complied with the Finnish demand to remove their troops by 15th September and Finnish armed forces have been deployed against them.
Major General Hersey has announced that conscription to the United States army for men over 26 is no longer required as they have reached the requisite 11 million, laid down by the House of Representatives.
