My dear David
Many happy returns of the day – I might even say “many happi[underlined]er[/underlined] returns of the day” I think - anyway you know what I mean. I was so sorry to miss you and Joyce on the 13th. I left as you know – the day before – I never do seem to have any luck where your visits are concerned. I got back from Dedham on Tuesday last – and now feel rather snowed under with letters to write as I have got to be off for almost a month's lecturing in March & I still have some dates to fix. By that time
[page break]
it will probably have decided to stop being Spring (there is a yellow crocus out, in the garden today) & have reverted to what the B.B.C. would call “arctic conditions” so I shall really enjoy being in Lancashire, Westmoreland, Northumberland and Durham!
Lots of love & good wishes and good luck to you.
