Description
HS Rawlings grew up in London and having volunteered for the RAF, he was accepted for pilot training. He was posted to RAF Tuddenham and, along with regular operations, he also flew supplies and agents to France. He was burned when fire erupted in the cockpit and he was blown out of the aircraft. He lost an eye and injured his arm. He was taken prisoner and was sent to Stalag Luft 7. He was on the Long March and was liberated by the Americans from Luckenwalde. On his return to the UK, Archibald McIndoe operated on his eye.
