My dear Douglas,
I couldn’t tell you just how I felt on Tuesday morning when your letter, 8/8/41, arrived with two photos enclosed. But at any rate I can tell you that I was thrilled indeed. Thank you so much for taking the trouble to get them. It is such joy to look upon a recent photo of you, & also a joy to see so little change in your appearance. I expected to see you looking older but it is just the same dear face ad ever, & it is with deepest reverence & gratitude that I say Thank God that you are still alive & well. It is exactly a year ago tonight since the telegram arrived from the Air Ministry telling that you were safe in Tunisia & you already know what that has meant to me. To revert to the photos, if you had not told me in previous letters that you had put on a lot of weight I should have said you had not altered the least little bit. It is grand to see you looking happy, with your friends.
When your letter was written you were rather anxious at not having letters but about that time there seemed to be more than the usual disturbance & probably many of them were lost. We now seem to get all the cables safely & as
[page break]
you say they are a very happy link. The reply which you sent on July 1st was received here on July 15th & probably you have already got my letter telling you this.
Grandad is still here & seems quite happy & fairly well. This afternoon we have been to one of the parks, (there are 3 in Nelson), & it was a very pleasant little outing. The dahlias were very beautiful, & it was quite and easy journey as we could go by bus from home to the park gates.
Auntie Dorothy came again on Tuesday & seemed very happy (for once) about everything. Next Tuesday I expect she will come to go back with Grandad, then perhaps I shall have rather more time to answer some of your previous letters. There is so much to say & so much that I want to ask you even though the replies do take a very long time. Well love I am going to say Goodnight to you now as I am rather later than usual. I am sending a cutting from The Guardian announcing Don Chadwick’s wedding at Cheadle. I hope the censor will let you have it. Just in case he doesn’t Don was married at Cheadle on Sept, 20th to Heather Kenward. Did you know about the lady? Now to close I send all our love & very many thanks again for the precious photos. You’re certainly not “chubby! to me. Think they are pulling your leg. I like your socks!!!
