Dear Mama,
There being absolutely nothing else to do at all, you may get a reasonably long letter from me for once - especially as we are only allowed to write three; the censor will also have a lot of waffle to wade through, but I have a fellow-feeling for him, as I look like being let in for a spot of it myself' I've gazed my fill at the surrounding countryside, as I feel that I may as well do so while there is some countryside to look at. The gulls have already begun to pall; besides, they are much more evil-looking than the ones you watch

from the floating-bridge. If we had enough ammunition, they would make excellent revolver practice, but then someone would probably pot & albatross and ruin everything. The ship is “dry” (unless you call ginger ale “wet”), which needless to say has not gone down at all well.
I had a very pleasant train journey; the first thing that happened when I arrived was that a Security Officer rushed me into a canteen & proceeded to hack off your bea[inserted]u[/inserted]tiful green shoulder-flashes with a penknife. I may say that he commented not once but many times on the excellent shewing [sic].
They've just done the dirty on us and called in all mail, so this
[page break]
is not so long as I expected. Will you thank the Aunts very much for putting me up; I'll cable to you when I get somewhere. Till then, lots of love.
