Brierfield and Nelson D.F.C.s.
The D.F.C. has been awarded “in recognition of many successful operations against the enemy in which they have displayed high skill, fortitude and devotion to duty.” To Flight Lieut. Leslie Roberts (21) only son of Mrs Dawson, 107, Sackville-street, Brierfield and Pilot Officer James Douglas Hudson of Nelson.
Flight-Lieut. Roberts joined the Air Force in 1941 and after training at Miami, Florida was attached to Bomber Command qualifying later as a pathfinder. He has taken part in over fifty operations over enemy territory, including some of the biggest raids in the war. Once his machine had to make a forced landing.
He was born in Briercliffe and educated first at Haggate Council School and then at Brierfield Walter-street School, and also at the Burnley Municipal College. Before he joined up he was a member of the office staff at Brierfield Mills.
Pilot Officer Hudson was educated at Skipton and Manchester Grammar Schools. He was commissioned in 1944, after service in the ranks.
