At the start of the war 50 Squadron was flying Hampdens from RAF Waddington as part of 5 Group. From July 1940 to July 1941 the squadron was based at RAF Lindholme. It then moved to RAF Swinderby until November 1941 before moving to RAF Skellingthorpe where it converted to Manchesters in April 1942 before almost immediately converting to Lancasters the following month. From June to October 1942 the squadron returned to RAF Swinderby before returning once more to RAF Skellingthorpe from where it operated Lancasters for the rest of the war. The squadron carried out the most operations of Bomber Command heavy squadrons.
