Pilot Officer Twells has completed a total of forty-seven sorties as a Flight Engineer. He has taken part in attacks against the majority of the most heavily defended targets in Germany including eight against Berlin, three against Hamburg, and attacks against Essen, Dusseldorf, and Frankfurt. Since taking part in these attacks he has completed twenty-four sorties with a Special Duties Squadron, the last seven of which have been in daylight against targets of vital importance to the enemy. Pilot Officer Twells has had to face time and again the most intense opposition from the enemy defences. He has frequently suffered severe damage to his aircraft but never once has he allowed himself to be distracted from his duties or his enthusiasm to be damped. His coolness and devotion to duty in the face of heavy odds have been an inspiration to his captain and to the rest of his crew and have resulted in the successful completion of attacks and great damage to the enemy.
This officer has always displayed superb airmanship and courage in the most adverse circumstances and I therefore recommend him for the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Signed by Commanding Officer
Rank – Group Captain
