Ode to [underlined] 50 [/underlined] Squadron R.A.F.

Twas last night that I saw them, in the skies they'll fly no more,
My squadron so valiant and brave.
A squadron of England's fairest fighting men
Flying quick and steady to the grave
No trumpets blared before them, but the Merlin's mighty roar.
No intoxicants ran through them, but the rich, red wine of War
And I'll see them, as I saw them flying yestereve,
Flying quick and steady to the grave.

Twas last night that I saw them, in the skies they'll fly no more,
For they're sleeping in the sunset down below.
With their faces to the eastward, like the chivalry of yore
To the eastward, full of promise and the foe
But, I'll keep them in my inner heart, with a love that none deny,
My squadron, so valiant and brave
And I'll see them, as I saw them, flying yestereve
Flying quick and steady to their graves.

[inserted] "With best wishes"
