PILOT OFFICER WINS D.F.C.
Pilot Officer Charles B. Hamilton, R.A.F., only son of Mr & Mrs James Hamilton Drumullan Smithy, Girvan, has been awarded the D.F.C. He was educated at Girvan High School and joined the R.A.F in June, 1940, at the age of 18. He flew a night fighter ‘plane over Germany as his first operational duties and is now on escort work. Pilot Officer Hamilton took part in the invasion of Normandy. He told his parents that he got the D.F.C. for “knocking down Huns.” When 19 years of age he was congratulated by his fellow flyers as being the youngest Warrant Officer in the Royal Air Force. He is now 22 years of age. Prior to joining up he was employed at Trochrague Gardens. He has four brothers-in-law in the Forces, one on the Navy, one in the R.A.F, and two in the Army. A sister is with the A.T.S. Another sister was with the A.T.S. but was discharged some time ago.
