Late in 1944 the Technische Amt of the RLM insisted that the ME 163D project be turned over to Junkers for further development and production. The aircraft was then re-dseignated [sic] the Junkers JU 248. This designation only lasted for a short time as RLM ordered that the designation ME 263 be used.
