In May 1943 1575 Special Duties Flight was formed at RAF Tempsford to support the Special Operations Executive (SOE). It was initially equipped with Venturas and Halifaxes. The Flight moved to North Africa in June 1943 and commenced SOE operations in Corsica, Sardinia and Italy. The Flight was renamed 624 Squadron in September 1943 and expanded its operations to include Albania, Greece, Yugoslavia and southern France. By then the squadron was using Halifaxes and Stirlings. The squadron’s main role was dropping agents and supplies to resistance groups. The squadron disbanded in September 1944 but reformed in December 1944 in Italy as a mine-spotting squadron equipped with Walruses, Hurricanes and Ansons.
