31 (Coastal) Squadron South African Air Force was formed in December 1939 in Natal and the Eastern Province. It flew Ju 86s, Ansons and a single Blenheim until being disbanded in July 1942. It reformed as a heavy bomber squadron in January 1944 and moved to Egypt operating B-24s. It moved to southern Italy in June 1944 from where it operated until the end of the war. At the end of the war the squadron helped repatriate ex-prisoners of war from Italy back to England.
