MR. GANDHI AND CONGRESS LEADERS ARRESTED
SWIFT GOVERNMENT REPLY TO CHALLENGE
SAFETY OF INDIA THE FIRST NEED
SEVERAL KILLED IN BOMBAY RIOTING
The Government of India have replied swiftly to the challenge of the Congress Party. Soon after the All-India Congress Committee had accepted the resolution calling for the withdrawal of British power and sanctioning the launching of mass disobedience, Mr. Gandhi, Pandit Nehru, and many other party leaders were arrested.
There have been disturbances in several towns. In Bombay rioters were fired on, and five persons were killed.
Mr. Jinnah, the president of the Moslem League, has warned members of the Congress Party not to interfere with, molest, harass, or picket Moslems. Such action, he said, would lead to the gravest situation.

From Our Correspondent
WASHINGTON, Aug. 12
The Navy Department announced to-night that United States marines have landed on three islands in the vicinity of Tulagi, in the Solomons, and are consolidating their positions. The following is the official statement:-
Operations in the Solomons are still in progress. It has been confirmed that U.S. Marines landed as scheduled on three islands in the vicinity of Tulagi. The Marines are engaged in consolidating their positions.
Supporting Navy forces have been engaged in bitter fighting, details of which are not yet available.
[map]
United States Army and Australian aircraft are continuing their attacks on enemy landing-fields and shore-based aircraft.
There is substantial evidence that the Japanese had planned, and had well under way, the development of an enemy base in the Tulagi area.
Until more details are available it is impossible to elaborate further these operations. All available communication facilities are overtaxed by urgent messages concerning operations.
