Dear Madam,

[underlined] ALLOTMENT: 419441, F/SGT. CAHIR, F.S., “MISSING”. [/underlined]

[date stamp] 27 JAN 1944

With reference to the allotment of pay made in your favour by the above named member, who unfortunately has been reported “Missing”, it is desired to advise that in accordance with War Cabinet decision, payment of allotment in respect of which no dependants allowance is being paid, may be made for a period of three months after date of receipt by this office of casualty advice, subject to further review at the expiration of this period, or should further advice regarding casualty be received in the meantime.

2. Payment of the current allotment, beyond the above-mentioned three months period, is subject to the use to which the allotment is being applied, and consideration will be given to continuance thereafter, providing it is established that hardship would be caused by cessation of payments.

3. If the allotment is being banked for the member, or otherwise held in trust for him, advice to this effect is required. If, however, the allotment in whole or portion thereof is being used to meet certain fixed commitments of member, such as payment of insurance premiums, action may be taken to continue payment beyond the three months period, at a rate which will meet such commitments, providing specific details are furnished to this office.

4. Should it be claimed that the allotment is required for maintenance of the household and that hardship would be caused by cessation, it will be necessary that full details of income of the household, including earnings of members of same, shall be indicated in substantiation of claim for continuance beyond the period of three months.

5. Your early advice in this regard will be greatly appreciated.

Yours faithfully,

W.S. Tregear.
