PILOT BROUGHT HOME BADLY DAMAGED BOMBER: WINS D.F.C.
DAILY TELEGRAPH REPORTER
The greatly increased tempo of our bombing offensive against German targets in recent months is reflected in one of the longest lists of awards ever issued by the Air Ministry, published to-day. It covers five bars to the D.F.C., 123 D.F.C.s, one bar to the D.F.M. and 54 D.F.M.s.
Here are some of the outstanding incidents referred to in the citations:
[symbol] Actg [Underlined] Flt. Lt. A.N. Hollis, [/Underlined] of No. 50 Squadron, gets the D.F.C: In July, when attacking Essen, his aircraft was caught in a cone of searchlights and subjected to accurate A.A. fire. Much damage was caused to the machine, the “inter-com.” was rendered unserviceable, both tyres burst, and many holes were made in the fuselage. [symbol]
In addition, the aircraft was attacked by an enemy fighter and the rear turret was considerably damaged. Flt. Lt. Hollis not only shook off his assailant, but by skilful pilotage, brought his charge safely home.
Flt. Lt. J.R. Wood, 27, No. 10 Squadron, a Gateshead man living at Dunston-on-Tyne, Durham, also gets the D.F.C. In one raid his aircraft survived two attacks by A.A. fire, once over the target, when two petrol tanks were pierced and much petrol lost, and later when crossing the French coast on the return journey from gunfire, both from the ground and from flak ships.
On reaching England only two engines were working, and Flt. Lt. Wood had to make a crash landing. On many other occasions he has flown badly damaged aircraft safely to base.
