For bringing back safely from a Hanover raid a flak and fire-damaged Lancaster which only had two engines working properly Warrant Officer C.J. S. Walker, the pilot of Thornton Heath, and Sergeant S. Mayer, engineer, of Balham, have won the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal, and Sergeant R. Hebditch, wireless operator, and Sergeant Geoffrey Whittle, navigator, son of Mr. A. Whittle, South Park-crescent, Catford, the D.F.M. They put out the fire, and next day a piece of flak was found in the bomb bay.
