My dear Mary, Thank you very much for the lovely apron you sent me. I am afraid this letter will not reach you till after Christmas day is past, it isnt [sic] a bit of good the postmaster general telling me to get card’s etc off before the 18 th I developed a bad influenza cold so could not read or write, however it is a bit better to-day. I am making an effort. Just as I started the “Alert” sounded & someone knocked on the door, perhaps one of the Guard, however we sit still & await events. I expect Annie will come in presently to see we are alright. She has been down to Barrow this afternoon & has not been back very long, her husbands [sic] hours are so long she cannot get out much, he is at home today, the children are very excited about [inserted] Christmas [/inserted] [deleted] it all [/deleted] & have

already got many presents a good many books. June tho [sic] only six is a great reader & a very good writer & she has missed school a bit with measles whooping cough & last bronchitis. I had a [indecipherable word] from Auntie Fanny this morning & she told me Mother had gone back to Enids [sic]. I had such a [indecipherable word] calender [sic] from Donald the other [indecipherable word] that he had made. & a note from Mabel, they are having a party tomorrow. I hope all will be well for them, for they have had some severe bombings, it is awful. I also had a calender [sic] from Harry [indecipherable word], you will [indecipherable words] I [indecipherable word]. they have another little Son. David Charles. Another great great nephew. I hope Margaret is happy at College & that Rosemary & all of [indecipherable word] are well. With our love & every good wish for the New Year from your affectionate
