RAF Luqa played a major role in the strategic use of the island of Malta allowing Allied offensive action in the Mediterranean, North African and Italian theatres. The island itself was under heavy aerial attack 1941-43 and fighters defended Malta from RAF Luqa and several satellite airfields on the island. Aircraft operating from Malta included Gladiators, Hurricanes, Spitfires, Blenheims, Beauforts, Beaufighters, Baltimores and Wellingtons. Squadrons redeployed from Bomber Command at various times to Malta were 18, 21, 82, 105, 107, 110 and 139 with Blenheims and 37, 38, 40, 70, 104, 148 and 162 with Wellingtons. The RAF left Luqa in 1979 and it is now the Malta International Airport.
