The site was a training airfield during World War One. It was formerly named RAF Leuchars in 1920. In 1935 1 Flying Training School was established at the station. In 1938 the station was transferred to Coastal Command and during the war was used by Ansons, Hudsons, Blenheims, Beauforts, Hampdens, Beaufighters, B-24s and Mosquitos. 144 Squadron and 455 Squadron were both stationed at RAF Leuchars after transferring from Bomber Command. During the war civilian registered Mosquitos, C-47s and Lodestars ran flights to neutral Sweden to and from RAF Leuchars ferrying people and high value cargoes. Post war the station was used by RAF fighters until 2015 when ownership transferred to the British Army. The station however remains an RAF diversionary airfield for RAF Lossiemouth.
