On Friday 27th September 1940, the Luftwaffe carried out extensive daylight raids over London, Bristol and Southern Counties.
Messerschmitt ME 110’s of Erprobungsgruppe 210 attacked the small aircraft factory of Parnall’s at Yate. These were bomb carrying 110’s escorted by fighter 110’s of ZG76.
On their return flight some of the 110’s were intercepted by Hurricanes of 504 and 56 Sqdns, and at approximately 12 midday, one of the bomb carrying 110’s force landed at The Beeches, Preston Hill, Avenue Minster Dorset, as a result of damage sustained.
The aircraft was a “write off” and the crew of two were captured. Feldwebel EBNER sustained slight wounds and Gefreiter ZWICK had severe wounds. The aircraft was coded S9 + DK indicating that it was from the second Staffel of Erprobungsgruppe (experimental group of bomb carrying aircraft) 210; and the werke (Factory) number was 4270. The type was ME110D.
The Luftwaffe lost a total of 39 aircraft on this particular day.
Hurricanes of 56 Sqdn came from Boscombe Down and 504 were from Filton.
