It opened in 1937 as an armament training school. During the war the station housed 4 Bombing and Gunnery School, 4 Observer Advanced Flying Unit and the Bomber Command Experimental Unit. Currently MOD West Freugh test ranges, offshore and onshore, are still used for bombs and air-to-ground missile testing.
