ROYAL AIR FORCE.
The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the undermentioned award in recognition of gallantry displayed in flying operations against the enemy:-
Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Pilot Officer John Bently WEIGHTMAN (43255).
During a night in July, 1940, this officer, as pilot and captain of a Hudson Aircraft, took off during an air raid, under adverse weather conditions and without navigation lights, on a reconnaissance flight along the Norwegian coast. Before reaching his objective he sighted and successfully attacked an enemy submarine. On returning from his objective, where he had obtained excellent photographs, he was attacked by two Messerschmitt 110’s one of which was badly damaged by his air gunner. Pilot Officer Weightman’s conduct on this flight was commendable in the highest degree. Since the outbreak of hostilities he has flown a total of 360 hours, comprising 92 operational flights over the sea. He has taken part in six successful bombing raids against the enemy.
