To:- P/O BIRD No. 104 Squadron, R.A.F.
KALAMAKI, TATOI and ELEUSIS raids – 9/10th October, 1944.
The following signal, sent to the Air Officer Commanding No. 205 Group by Major-General Twining, Commanding the XVth Air Force, has been passed to me, and it is with great pleasure that I carry out the instruction of the Air Officer Commanding to bring this message to your notice:-
Begins:
Despite bad base conditions together with a route forecast which entailed penetrating frontal conditions, last night your bombers carried out their mission with excellent results. This attack, which was carried out without loss, marks efficiency and courage on the part of crews participating. Please convey to all ranks under your command my appreciation of this noteworthy effort.
Message ends.
Apart from the bad weather on route all these targets were found and bombed in conditions of complete darkness by the initiative and skill of individual crews without P.F.F. assistance. The job was particularly well done and up to the highest Wimpey tradition; it materially added to the discomfiture of the retreating enemy in Greece.
