SOUTHGATE SERGEANT AIR-GUNNER REPORTED MISSING
“JIM” DICKERSON, OLD BOY OF COUNTY SCHOOL, FOX LANE
[photograph]
Within a week of being home on leave, Sergeant Alfred James Dickerson, of the R.A.F., younger son of Mr. and Mrs. George Dickerson, 16 Hillside Grove, Southgate, has been posted as “missing” following a raid over Germany when it was officially stated that six of our aircraft failed to return.
The notification was received by his parents on Thursday of last week and, on Monday morning, confirmation by letter came from the officer commanding their son’s squadron.
MANY MESSAGES.
Mr. and Mrs. George Dickerson, who have lived in Southgate all their lives, are appreciative of the many messages sent to them by friends. Mr. Dickerson is employed by Southgate Borough Council.
“Jim,” who is 24, was educated in Southgate (C. of E.) School, Chase Road, and Southgate County School. He joined the staff of the Northmet – attached to their Wood Green stores department - and was admitted to the R.A.F. in 1940.
A year later he became wireless operator and air-gunner and was promoted sergeant. While with the Northmet he played cricket for their sports club and was also a keen table tennis player.
ENGAGED TO BE MARRIED.
“Jim” Dickerson was engaged to Miss Vera Kennett, of Edmonton, and had planned to be married on his next leave. He came home on six days’ leave recently, returning to his squadron on Friday, January 23rd.
The raid in which he took part, and from which he is reported “missing,” was his first operational flight.
With their many friends we hope that Mr. and Mrs. George Dickerson will soon receive more reassuring news of their sergeant son.
