STRONG FORCE RAID HAMBURG
Pilots Fly Below Clouds, Start Big Fires
32 R.A.F. BOMBERS ARE MISSING
"HAMBURG WAS AGAIN ATTACKED LAST NIGHT BY A STRONG FORCE OF BOMBERS" SAID THE AIR MINISTRY THIS AFTERNOON.
"There was much cloud over the target and many aircraft attacked from a low level. Large fires were seen.
"Aerodromes in the Low Countries were also bombed. Thirty-two bombers are missing.
"Two enemy fighters were destroyed yesterday by Coastal Command aircraft on patrol, one by a Sunderland and the other by a Beaufighter."
A number of the bombers' crews flew below the clouds in face of fierce opposition to bomb Hamburg.
The port had its heaviest raid on Sunday night, when 175,000 incendiaries were dropped on the port in 35 minutes as a prelude to an attack with high explosives.
As our bombers headed for their target last night, Air Marshal Harris, Chief of Bomber Command, was broadcasting this warning to the eGrman [sic] people :- "We are going to scourge the Third Reich from end to end. You have no chance. Soon we shall be coming every night and every day, rain, blow or snow - we are [sic] the Americans.
